Writing isn't just a skill—it's a powerful tool that can fuel your passion and profession.
When I started writing, I never thought it would become my passion and profession.
Before that, I was a college teacher, crafting countless student notes and honing my academic writing skills.
When I quit my first job to work from home, I wondered what I could do with my teaching experience, academic excellence, and writing proficiency.
I explored everything! Searched Google high and low. The result? Finding a freelancing platform to search for online jobs.
After six months of hard work, I landed an academic writing gig. That's when I decided to make writing my profession. It transformed my writing skills into a professional asset!
Now, let's explore how writing became my passion as well...
In 2019, I deactivated Facebook and started exploring LinkedIn. I shared my stories, experiences, and expertise. The initial months were discouraging, but slowly, I gained traction. Appreciation from experts kept me going. Unexpected rewards, projects, and leads helped me tap into my writing potential, and I realized—writing was also my passion!
Today, I'm a writer, author, and content creator!
All this happened because I tapped into my writing skills and used them for both passion and profession. I did it without guidance, but you don't have to! I'm here to guide you if you have the potential for writing. I don't want you to waste the time figuring things out on your own—use that time to be productive. This blog is all about that.
In this blog, I'll share three key points on using your writing skills for your profession:
3 Ways to Use Writing as a Passion & Profession:
(1) Showcase your work on public platforms:
Until you showcase your skills, how will others find you? Choose your favorite platforms—LinkedIn, Medium, your own blog, Instagram, etc.—and start writing. Don't overthink it! Write and share whatever you want. No niche? No worries! Write about everything you know. Still stuck? Start writing about your everyday life in simple words; just 200-300 words.
My favorite platform is LinkedIn—a professional networking hub where you can connect with potential clients, fellow writers, mentors, and industry experts. You can also share your writing on other platforms like Medium or your own blog.
(2) Build a portfolio:
Your portfolio is your virtual landing page—a collection of your best writing samples. Gather your best blog posts, articles, website copy, social media posts, and anything else that showcases your writing skills. Organize them neatly in one place! Many platforms help you build your portfolio, like Carrd. You can design your website and share your write-ups there.
I have a "portfolio" section on my own website to showcase my work. Having a portfolio saves time when submitting samples to potential clients.
(3) Use platforms and pitch clients:
Once you have a portfolio, it's time to turn passion into a profession. Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and Contently offer plenty of freelance writing opportunities. Learn how to pitch, tailor your message to different clients, and confidently send emails.
I learned to pitch and win clients through practice—you can too! Don’t expect an instant reply after sending 10 emails and bidding 10 projects on freelance platforms. Ready to accept rejections along with acceptance. Do you work – pitch your clients.
Remember: These points are your launchpad, but prioritise the first two points if your primary focus is passion. Let your love for writing shine through your platform and portfolio.
Final Words
In my journey, I have seamlessly blended my passion and professionalism. Writing is not only my passion but also my livelihood.
Irrespective of the case, I follow commitment, discipline, communication, and persistence!
And remember this line: “No matter how you choose to use your writing skills, they will be a valuable asset in both your personal and professional life.”
Let's continue this journey of words together. 🚀✨
